CivicApps is a Portland-area regional open data initiative, aimed at making civic data open to the public for analysis and software development. (Postponed) Esri Geo Hackathon! through TBD - Portland UPDATE: Due to several people on our team being out of town, we've had to postpone this event until later this year. We'll be sure to add it to calagator when we pick a new date! We're throwing a big hackathon to showcase a bunch of new Esri tools! Come be some of the first to check out new and improved documentation, user interface and new SDKs and APIs for Esri's core technology. New to Esri? Basically, you can do anything add any kind of geo-functionality any product or app you're working on. From maps and data, geocoding and routing, demographic data and more, you'll be able to check out and test work from Esri R&D Center Portland and Esri HQ in Redlands! There will be plenty of free food and drink, and networking kickoff the night before. Teams will have Friday night until 6pm Sunday to build apps using Esri technology. We'll have sample code on Github and a ton of example projects. There will also be plenty of Esri devs on site to help out. Who should attend?Feel free to participate if you're a designer or developer, college student, professional, high school student or someone just interested in geo. If you don't know HTML/CSS but are a skilled graphic designer, we need you too! Think of it as a playground for trying new things out. What kind of prizes will there be?Prizes will be announced soon, but suffice it to say they will likely be interesting objects that fly through the air. Dispatches from the Data Frontier: Hack Oregon Demo Night!! – Empirical Theater at OMSI DEMO DAY 2016 Hack Oregon has been hard at work since February using data to find insight on important topics facing our state. We've had over 100 volunteers contribute over 10,000 man hours to bring you one night of data-driven wonderment! Join us as we unleash a new set of open data projects that will change the way you see Oregon. Kindly RSVP on Eventbrite Project Teasers "Oregon Hunger Equation" Year after year, Oregon has one of the highest reported rates of food insecurity in the country. If you ask the question, "Who's hungry?": The answer is kids. The data is clear, but the reality is hard. We've made a dynamic program to explore systemic causes of hunger at home by placing a special focus on resources available to families with young children including regional cost of living, state benefit programs, and inequalities local schools districts. "Behind the Curtain” We're lifting the veil off election politics with a fascinating high-level view of influence and money in Oregon's election cycles. Hack Oregon has the only machine readable database for local campaign finance in the country, and we've learned that influence is as much about relationships as it about dollars. And at the local level, your vote matters A LOT. This year, we've added new meta-data to reveal effects of industry buy-in and individual patronage during an election cycle... with a few surprises. Unlock the real story behind politics and feel ultra-empowered as a voter this November. “Plot PDX” Data can tell us a lot about our neighborhoods. At a time when Portland is experiencing rapid growth and change, it's more important than ever that all communities have equal access to information that can inform decisions about the future of our city. We're giving the community access to a range of data which has never been available on one platform. Explore Portland's neighborhoods as you've never seen them before, on topics that you care about, like demolitions, crime, and the rising cost of rent. “Crop Compass" In the Pacific Northwest, we live in one of the most rich biospheres in the world, with global demand for Oregon grown products. We have the ability to produce a wide range of food in Oregon, but we're far from self-sustaining. How much of our regional vitality is retained inside of Oregon, and how much do we ship out? How do our economic and environmental factors work together to shape our food system? We've created a tool that gives insight into multi-dimensional patterns across land use, crop diversity, subsidies, seasonality, and import/export trends to help understand more about the mechanics of how food gets from farm to table. "Programming to Progress" Across Oregon, some schools are lucky enough to have free or low-cost summer school programming and/or after school programming--- and the playing field is not level. How much of a difference does after school and summer school programming make for early literacy, attendance, and future academic success of students? Hack Oregon has the first aggregate statewide analysis of the link between performance and expanded programming, with some surprising implications of region-wide impact that goes beyond the classroom. |

Donut Summit: Hack Oregon Project Season Kick Off – Falcon Building Donut Summit: Hack Oregon Project Season Kick-Off....Pretty much your standard Sunday donuts and coffee with artists, developers, data scientists, government, and business owners casually design thinking a better Oregon. Oh yeah, plus all the data. NBD Hack Oregon opens its doors twice a year to assemble interdisciplinary focus teams of volunteers to build open-data resources on important themes in Oregon. At the Summit we'll introduce new themes for projects and assemble teams. We won't be coding this afternoon, but it's a exciting space for cross-pollination between disciplines while we take the afternoon to collaborate, plan, and constructively brainstorm. Some of you will get started hacking soon, and others we'll see later as the project cycle progresses. Everyone is welcome, and we can't wait to meet you! Themes
PS: Showing up to the Summit is not a commitment to volunteer, but fair warning, after you experience this you might just step through the looking glass and disappear into the data rabbit hole :) |

Hack Oregon Civic Lab - Data Synth Song: Experiencing Data as Audio – Falcon Building This session, by Nick Lambert, will explore the possibilities of turning visual data into a musical soundscape. How can this become something where a set of data points can be its own song? How would this be done and shown on a website? Some of this we will talk logistics and how it would function on the Hack Oregon website, and some of this we will actually try to create together. Join us, as we think of sounds, synth pads, instruments, beats, AND data that could make up an experience like never before. Nick Lambert is the Design Lead for the Hack Oregon Homelessness Team and Community Director at Oregon Story Board. Hack Oregon's Civic Lab is made up of Oregon's brightest coders, creatives, government leaders, and community members working together to discover the invisible stories of our civic life. Hack Oregon Civic Lab - The Importance of Open Data in Elections with Special Guest: Larry Morgan – Falcon Building In Oregon, the Secretary of State's office manages Voting, Elections, and the Business Registry. Among other things, that means they capture and manage data to account for every dollar in Oregon's political campaigns and every vote cast across our state. It's no secret that data is an increasingly integral part of 21st-century government. How is Oregon adapting to an evolving technology landscape when it comes to information and technology? At a time that seems pivotal for transparency and citizen inclusion, let's talk about the opportunities and challenges of open data on our democratic process. Fireside chat by: Cat Nikolovski Larry Morgan is the Citizen Engagement and Inclusion Coordinator for Oregon Secretary of State, Dennis Richardson. He is also the youngest elected official in the City of Troutdale's history and the first person of color to serve on it's City Council. Portland Open Data Day 2023 Disco Tech through Portland Building To the civic tech community, data analysts, open software developers, designers, advocates, community, and local organizations working on data, local residents and all those interested in civic data. This event is an opportunity to engage with local residents to explore the City’s neighborhood data and other City of Portland open datasets and maps. This Disco Tech will include workshops and tables to help people to learn about data from zero to subject matter experts. "DiscoTech" is short for "Discovering Technology." It is a term coined by the Detroit Digital Justice Coalition which defines a replicable model for a multimedia, mobile neighborhood workshop fair. DiscoTechs are designed so that participants learn more about the impact and possibilities of technology within our communities. The purpose of this event is to create a space for local residents and organizations to explore Portland neighborhoods data and other city open datasets. You can explore developing apps or spreadsheets to facilitate data visualization. Or, do your own data exploration and analysis, enhance the city data with other datasets; Or, dig deeper and explore metadata and link information underneath. Participants will have the opportunity to learn, propose ideas and projects to others, join a team or individually, and develop their own analysis and apps that may contribute to our larger Portland Community. Multicultural, socially responsible, and projects in languages other than English are encouraged. The Smart City PDX program team members are committed to dismantling barriers derived from systemic discrimination that have reduced the voice of marginal communities in Portland. We base our approach on digital rights and equity principles like Targeted Universalism and the Smart City PDX Priorities Framework to build local policy that promotes equity and fairness. We want this event to become a collaborative space, rather than something competitive. So, we won’t be offering prizes or awards; however, we will be able to incentivize community participation. Projects will have the opportunity to be featured in the Smart City PDX site. Be creative! Learn! Explore! |
